Football Recap: Semra Obuz and Luna Poulet Pace Coral Gables Defense

Coral Gables extended their losing streak to three on Wednesday, dropping their season record down to 5-4 in the process. They took a 19-6 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Homestead Broncos. While losing is never fun, the Cavaliers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida football rankings (they are ranked 91st, while the Broncos are ranked 12th).

Coral Gables didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Semra Obuz and Luna Poulet. With that strong performance, Poulet is now averaging an impressive 5.3 total tackles per game.

As for Homestead, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-4 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 5.0 points on average over those games.

Homestead got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Zakieria Cobb out in front who rushed for 39 yards and one score, and also picked up 78 receiving yards. Cobb also put in work on the defensive side of the ball, picking up a sack and making two total tackles. Jerniyah Fowles was another key player, having thrown for 272 yards and two touchdowns.

Coral Gables has already played their next contest, a 27-0 victory against Southwest on the 14th. As for Homestead, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next match, a 27-0 win against Varela on the 15th.
