Baseball Recap: Columbia's Victory on Wednesday Extends Winning Streak to Four

Columbia lost a heartbreaker the last time they played Garden Spot, but it's fair to say they got their revenge given the result of Wednesday's matchup. Columbia put the hurt on Garden Spot with a sharp 9-1 win on Wednesday. This was payback for the Crimson Tide, who suffered a 4-2 loss the last time these two teams met.

Peyton Gilbert made a big impact no matter where he played. He struck out ten batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off five hits (and only one walk). He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run any time he's pitched this season. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with three RBI and one double.

In other batting news, Chase Marley was a standout: he scored three runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-4. Evan Mummaw was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.

Columbia kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Garden Spot only managed six hits.

The victory was the fourth in a row (dating back to last season) for Columbia, bringing their record up to 3-0. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.3 runs over those games. As for Garden Spot, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-1.

Columbia has already played their next contest, a 12-8 loss against Solanco on the 21st. As for Garden Spot, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next game, a 5-4 victory against Penn Manor on the 21st.
