Basketball Recap: Three Rivers Takes a Loss

Three Rivers was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their seventh straight defeat. They were outmatched by the Refugio Bobcats and fell 63-21. While losing is never fun, the Bulldogs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 1340th, while the Bobcats are ranked 543rd).

Three Rivers got a good chunk of their points from the dynamic duo of Nayelli Rivera and Lily Villarreal, who each put up nine points. Villarreal also led the team in assists with two. Kloe Duran held things down on the boards with five rebounds.

Refugio's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Bradi Fox-Smith led the charge by dropping a double-double on 19 points and 11 rebounds. Fox-Smith has been hot for a while, having posted eight or more boards the last 17 times she's played. Laken Cancino was another key player, putting up 21 points and four steals.

Three Rivers' loss dropped their record down to 7-12. As for Refugio, their win was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 21-4.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Three Rivers will challenge Kenedy at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Refugio, they will square off against Skidmore-Tynan at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Refugio is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 54.1 points per game this season.
