League recap: Rio Rico climbs in standings with win

Rio Rico was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from eighth to sixth in IV Section II. The Hawks defeated Catalina 42-41 earlier in the week.

Walden Grove moved up to 135 from 162 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. Walden Grove climbed the ranks as a result of topping Holbrook 14-12.

Seton Catholic's dynamic duo of David Gesicki and Matt Haggerty proved tough for Higley to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Gesicki threw for 247 yards and three touchdowns and Haggerty had 137 yards receiving. Daniel Garlid helped Seton Catholic's passing attack out by catching four balls for 42 yards.

Brodie Dallenogare was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 214 yards on eight carries as Globe beat the Knights. Teammate Lane Phillips added to the ground attack by rushing for 61 yards.

Haggerty made the biggest impact on defense this week as Seton Catholic topped Higley. The 6-foot-0 senior pulled down one interception.

6-foot-2 quarterback Nick Prueher of Combs is the league leader in passing yards this season with 1083. He has also thrown eight touchdowns. On the ground, Empire's Spencer Woody has rushed for 802 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Haggerty. The Seton Catholic star has 36 catches for 625 yards.

A big matchup in the league this week will be when the Tigers take on Safford. Globe is in fifth place, while the Bulldogs are in ninth place.

Rio Rico and the Trojans played the most hotly contested game in the league this week, with Rio Rico eventually emerging with a 42-41 victory. Aaron Fanning ran for 194 yards and caught four passes for 40 yards in the win.
