Football Recap: La Mirada Takes a Loss

La Mirada extended their losing streak to three on Friday, dropping them down to 2-3. They lost 35-10 to the La Habra Highlanders. While losing is never fun, the Matadores can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California football rankings (they are ranked 238th, while the Highlanders are ranked 67th).

Isaac Cuevas threw for 105 yards and one touchdown. Kaiden Wardlow was his top target, picking up 35 receiving yards and one TD. On the ground, Josiah Fregoso rushed for 51 yards.

As for La Habra, their win was their fifth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 4-1. Considering they have won three games by more than 24 points this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

La Habra's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Kevika Mata'Utia- Martinez, who rushed for 127 yards and a pair of scores on only 12 carries. Mata'Utia- Martinez has been hot recently, having also posted two or more rushing touchdowns the last three times he's played. Another signal caller making a difference was DJ Mitchell, who threw for 220 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming matchups. After each having a week off, La Mirada and Warren will shake off the rust and duke it out at 7:00 p.m. on the 3rd. This will be the Matadores' first chance to prove their worth in the conference. As for La Habra, they will head out on the road to square off against El Dorado at 7:00 p.m. on the 2nd. The Golden Hawks' defense has only allowed 12.4 points per game this season, so the Highlanders' offense will have their work cut out for them.
