Baseball Recap: Saint Ignatius College Prep Comes Up Short

Saint Ignatius College Prep had lost four straight at home, but on Monday they dropped their record down to 9-16 to make it five. They took a 4-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the St. Rita Mustangs. The Wolfpack were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Mustangs apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in April of 2024.

Saint Ignatius College Prep got a good showing from Ethan Conway, who tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Conway has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one earned run any time he's pitched this season.

At the plate, Saint Ignatius College Prep saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jacob Jelinek, who went 1-for-3 with one double.

As for St. Rita, their victory ended a four-game drought on the road and puts them at 10-14. Surprisingly, this marked their fifth straight game in which the away team has come away the victor.

On St. Rita's side, Sullivan Kazee spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on two hits and racked up six Ks. The Mustangs are undefeated when Kazee allows one or fewer earned runs, but 7-14 otherwise.

On the hitting side, Christian Clark was excellent, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run. He is becoming a predictor of St. Rita's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is 2-1 (and 8-13 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Peyton Panozzo, who got on base in two of his three plate appearances with one stolen base and one RBI.

While Saint Ignatius College Prep had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
