League recap: New Bern tops Laney to extend winning streak

4A Mideastern recap Oct. 23, 2012

New Bern extended the longest winning streak in 4A Mideastern this week by beating Laney, 19-7. This was the team's ninth consecutive win.

Ashley's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Chris Kane threw for 29 yards and Trey Eller had 24 yards receiving. On the ground Quincy Rhodes chipped in 162 yards. Anthony Andrews helped Ashley's passing attack out by catching one ball for five yards.

New Bern's Josh Taylor and Bra'lon Cherry have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Taylor has thrown for 1633 yards this season, while Cherry, a 5-foot-11 receiver, has 23 catches for 490 yards. Rhodes from Ashley leads the league in rushing with 1480 yards.

The marquee game in the league this week will be the clash between Hoggard and New Hanover. The Vikings enters the contest ranked 19th in the state, while the Wildcats ranks 10th.

New Hanover led 4A Mideastern in scoring this week after putting up 49 points on Rose.
