Football Game Preview: Northwestern Bulls vs. Mater Lakes Academy Bears

The Northwestern Bulls will take on the Mater Lakes Academy Bears at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. The two teams have allowed few points on average (Northwestern 6.2, Mater Lakes Academy 6.9) so any points scored will be well earned.

Northwestern is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Wednesday. They never let TERRA Environmental get on the board and left with a 7-0 win. Given the Bulls' advantage in MaxPreps' Florida football rankings (they are ranked 41st, while TERRA Environmental are ranked 129th) , the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Northwestern didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Alexie Nicolas and Jah'Keriyah Brown. Brown is also on a roll when it comes to defended passes, as she's now defended at least one in each of the last eight games she's played.

Meanwhile, Mater Lakes Academy had already won six in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 17.5 points) and they went ahead and made it seven on Wednesday. They took their contest with ease, bagging a 28-0 victory over the Vikings. Considering the Bears have won seven matchups by more than 19 points this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.

A big part of Mater Lakes Academy's win came down to the chemistry between Valentina Builes and her top target Nicole Regalado. Builes threw for 178 yards and four TDs while completing 73.7% of her passes while Regalado picked up 53 receiving yards and a pair of scores. That's the most passing yards Builes has posted since back in February.

Mater Lakes Academy's victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 12-4. Those home wins came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 4.8 points on average over those games. As for Northwestern, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-3 record this season.

Northwestern came up short against Mater Lakes Academy in their previous meeting last Thursday, falling 15-6. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Builes, who rushed for 66 yards and one touchdown, and also threw for 112 yards and one TD.
