Preview: Winfield Vikings vs. McPherson Bullpups
Winfield is 0-10 against McPherson since February of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Winfield Vikings will look to defend their home court against the McPherson Bullpups at 7:30 p.m. Winfield will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Kansas Rankings (they are ranked 273rd, while McPherson is ranked sixth).
Last Tuesday, Winfield came up short against El Dorado and fell 58-51.
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Christian Moree, who scored 19 points along with five rebounds and two steals. That was a full 37.3% of Winfield's points, marking the third time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Kellen Gibson, who scored seven points along with 12 rebounds and two blocks.
Even though they lost, Winfield smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 18 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, McPherson put another one in the bag on Tuesday to keep their perfect season alive. They walked away with a 56-45 win over Hays. Despite the win, that was the fewest points McPherson has scored all year.
Winfield dropped their record down to 2-12 with that defeat, which was their 12th straight on the road dating back to last season. As for McPherson, their win bumped their record up to 16-0.
Winfield might still be hurting after the 74-48 loss they got from McPherson in their previous meeting back in December of 2023. The contest was all but decided by halftime, at which point Winfield was down 48-17.
