Softball Game Preview: Marquette Crusaders vs. Dwight Trojans

For the second straight game, Marquette will face off against Dwight. The Crusaders will look to defend their home field on Thursday against the Trojans at 4:30 p.m. Marquette is coming into the contest hot, having won their last ten games.

Last Tuesday, Marquette made easy work of Dwight and carried off a 16-4 win. The result was nothing new for the Crusaders, who have now won eight matches by eight runs or more so far this season.

Taylor Cuchra was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing four innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off six hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with one home run.

In other batting news, Marquette got a massive performance out of Lily Brewer, who went 2-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and one double. Those four RBI gave Brewer a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Makayla Backos, who scored two runs while going 3-for-4.

Marquette kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in ten consecutive games.

Marquette pushed their record up to 12-1 with the victory, which was their fifth straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 15.0 runs over those games. As for Dwight, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-5.

Thursday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Marquette has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .503. However, it's not like Dwight struggles in that department as they've averaged .476. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
