Baseball Recap: Patton Drops Season-High Score on Avery County

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Patton). They put the hurt on the Avery County Vikings with a sharp 16-6 victory on Monday. The win continues a trend for the Panthers in their matchups with the Vikings: they've now won seven in a row.

Landry Duvall made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Patton is 2-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 6-7 otherwise. Duvall was even better at the plate, going 3-for-4 with five RBI, two runs, and two doubles. Those five RBI gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Patton got a massive performance out of Laine Barrier, who scored three runs while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances. Those three runs gave Barrier a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Cohen Christian, who scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances.

Patton was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

The victory got Patton back to even at 8-8. As for Avery County, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 3-10.

Looking ahead, Patton will head out on the road to challenge Polk County at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Panthers are facing the Wolverines at the right time seeing as the Wolverines are stuck on a four-game losing streak. As for Avery County, they will welcome Mountain Heritage at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Cougars have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 6.93 runs per game on average), something the Vikings will no doubt try to take advantage of.
