Basketball Recap: Highland Tech Drops Highest Score of Season Against Bessemer City

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Highland Tech). They came out on top against the Bessemer City Yellow Jackets by a score of 68-58 on Friday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Rams.

Highland Tech's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Elijah Sherrill led the charge by dropping a double-double on 26 points and 12 rebounds. Sherrill has been hot for a while, having posted 15 or more points the last 20 times he's played. Cooper McCraw was another key player, going 9 of 11 en route to 23 points and seven boards.

Highland Tech was working as a unit and finished the game with 16 assists. That's the most assists they've posted since back in February of 2024.

Bessemer City lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Jonathan Black, who went 6 for 11 on his way to 19 points. Another player making a difference was Tristen Gordon, who posted eight points and ten assists.

Highland Tech is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four games, which provided a nice bump to their 8-8 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 57.3 points per game. As for Bessemer City, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 10-7.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Highland Tech has already played their next contest (against R-S Central), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. Bessemer City will head out to square off against Shelby at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Bessemer City is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 71.6 points per game this season.
