High school football rankings: St. John Bosco solidifies spot at No. 1 in MaxPreps Top 25

St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) improved to 8-0 with a 27-14 win over Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) to solidify its spot at No. 1 in the MaxPreps Top 25 high school football rankings. The Braves host Servite (Anaheim, Calif.) on Friday before a huge showdown against No. 12 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) on Oct. 31.

Against Santa Margarita, Bosco quarterback Koa Malau'ulu completed 17 of 22 passes for 299 yards and four touchdowns. In eight games, the 6-foot-2 sophomore has thrown for 1,783 yards and 27 touchdowns against one interception. He is 13-2 as a starter dating back to last year with both losses coming to Mater Dei. 

Santa Margarita dropped two spots to No. 11 after suffering its third loss of the season. Head coach Carson Palmer's team has marquee wins over No. 5 Centennial (Corona, Calif.) and Mater Dei as part of what may be the nation's toughest schedule. Southlake Carroll (Southlake, Texas) was the only newcomer in the top 10. The Dragons have outscored their first eight opponents 421-71. Angelo Renda has thrown for 2,431 yards and 25 touchdowns. Wide receivers Brock Boyd, Blake Gunter and Brody Knowles have produced 106 catches for 2,027 yards and 24 scores. 

No. 18 Basha (Chandler, Ariz.) cruised to a 58-7 win over Salpointe Catholic (Tucson, Ariz.) to improve to 7-0. The Bears will be featured in the MaxPreps Game of the Week on Friday as they host Hamilton (Chandler, Ariz.) in a matchup of the top two teams in the state. 

No. 21 Cass Tech (Detroit) beat rival King (Detroit) for the second time this season to extend its winning streak to 18. The Technicians erased a 19-14 third-quarter deficit and scored 21 unanswered points for a 35-19 win at Ford Field to claim their fourth straight PSL title. Donald Tabron II threw a 99-yard touchdown pass to Will Sykes Jr. to ice the game late in the fourth quarter.
