Katelan Redmon hasn't even arrived at the University of Washington, but she's finding it hard to leave.

Redmon, who led Lewis and Clark of Spokane to the Class 4A state girls basketball title in March, has been trying to get released from her letter of intent to Washington.

Redmon signed in the fall when June Daughtery was coach, and she's since been fired and hired at Washington State. Redmond doesn't want to play for the new coaching staff at UW.

She received word from Washington athletic director Todd Turner on Thursday that she wouldn't be released.

"He declined the release," Chuck Redmon, Katelan's father, told the Spokesman-Review. "And it reads simply that he was disappointed. He kind of apologized for the circumstance of what transpired. But he said he needs to protect (his program) and he doesn't want to set a precedent."

The Redmon family said they will appeal the decision and are optimistic it will work out in their favor.

"She's not going to the University of Washington," Chuck Redmon said. "No matter what."

The speculation is that Redmon, a 6-foot wing who received offers from 20 colleges, wants to follow Daughtery to Washington State.

Baseball: State Tournament Begins Saturday

The Central Kitsap Cougars qualified for the Class 4A state tournament for the first time since 1996, but they'll have to continue with out their ace.

David Stilley, rated as one of the Northwest's top pitching prospects, will have Tommy John surgery Wednesday to repair a torn ligament in his left elbow. Stilley is hoping to be rehabbed in time for his sophomore season at Washington State.

"It's tough," said Stilley, who tore his left elbow tendon playing summer baseball in July. "I want to keep going and going, but injury calls."
