Baseball Recap: Gateway Regional Comes Up Short

Gateway Regional dropped to 14-12 on Friday, ending the team's three-game streak of wins on the road. They lost 9-0 to the Pennsauken Indians. The Gators were red-hot at the plate heading into the contest (they scored no less than ten runs in the three games prior), but the Indians' pitchers proved too tough.

As for Pennsauken, their win ended a five-game drought at home and bumped them up to 21-6. Considering they have won 16 matchups by more than five runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

For Pennsauken's part, Kelwin Batista made a splash no matter where he played. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 11 over 5.2 innings pitched. Batista has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in seven consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs.

In other pitching news, JosAngel Rodriguez looked comfortable as he pitched 1.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. What's more, he posted four strikeouts, the most he's had since back in April.

Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Roger Torres, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one home run and two RBI. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in April. Another player making a difference was Evan Chresthull, who went 3-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

Coming up, Gateway Regional will be playing in front of their home fans against Pleasantville at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Pennsauken, they are taking a road trip to face off against Paul VI at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday.
