Baseball Game Preview: Berkshire Badgers vs. Independence Blue Devils

Berkshire hasn't had much luck against Independence recently, but that could start to change on Thursday. The Badgers will host the Blue Devils at 5:00 p.m. Berkshire will be strutting in after a win while Independence will be coming in after a defeat.

Berkshire came out on top against Rootstown on Wednesday thanks in part to the team's impressive four-run second inning. The Badgers took their contest against the Rovers 6-1.

Sam Barcikoski made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off five hits (and only one walk). That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in May of 2025. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. He is becoming a predictor of Berkshire's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is 2-1 (and 2-3 when he doesn't).

In other pitching news, Paden Brent looked comfortable as he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Berkshire is 2-1 when Brent allows one or fewer earned runs, but 2-3 otherwise.

Back at the plate, Christopher Brancel was excellent, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base. That stolen base was his first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Patrick Brancel, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run.

Meanwhile, Independence came up short against Beachwood on Wednesday and fell 6-3.

The victory got Berkshire back to even at 4-4. As for Independence, their loss was their first in the conference, dropping their conference record down to 4-1 and their overall record down to 7-2.

Berkshire couldn't quite get it done against Independence when the teams last played back in April of 2024 as they fell 6-3. Can the Badgers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
