Football Recap: Troy Starts off Right with Win over El Modena

Troy gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Friday. They enjoyed a cozy 35-21 win over the El Modena Vanguards. The victory was all the more spectacular given the Warriors' disadvantage in MaxPreps' California football rankings (they are ranked 267th, while the Vanguards are ranked 105th).

Ethan Mundt had a dynamite game, rushing for 144 yards and one TD. He also deserves a shoutout for his performance on D, forcing one fumble and making seven total tackles (2.0 for loss). Andrew Acuna was in the mix too, providing Troy with two scores.

Troy's run defense was locked in: El Modena could only muster 2.8 yards per carry. The team can thank Mundt for the heroic effort on defense: he. Troy's ground attack was stronger, having averaged 4.5.

Despite the loss, El Modena still got an impressive performance from Samuel Jackett, who picked up 91 receiving yards, and also threw for 21 yards and one touchdown. Jackett showed off some serious burst, lighting up the secondary with a catch for 59 yards.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Troy will take on La Mirada at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for El Modena, they will face off against Dana Hills at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
