Football Recap: Whittier Christian Drops Highest Score of Season Against Maranatha

Whittier Christian scored the most points they've had this season on Friday, but it wasn't enough. They fell just short of the Maranatha Minutemen by a score of 42-39. The close matchup was extra heartbreaking for the Heralds, who almost overcame a 22 point deficit.

Whittier Christian's loss came despite strong showings from Josepablo Gutierrez and Caden Hogan. Gutierrez picked up 143 receiving yards and three TDs, while Hogan threw for 197 yards and four touchdowns on only 17 passes. Gutierrez's longest reception was for an incredible 84 yards.

Cooper Berry produced another solid effort throwing for 198 yards and three TDs, while also rushing for 140 yards on only 12 carries for Maranatha. Those 140 rushing yards gave Berry a new career-high. Morgan Freeman was another key player, rushing for 106 yards and one score.

Whittier Christian dropped their record down to 2-8 with the loss, which was their eighth straight on the road dating back to last season. As for Maranatha, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-3 record this season.

Whittier Christian does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Maranatha, they didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, a 42-28 defeat against Baldwin Park on the 7th.
