Baseball Recap: Mason County Eastern Victorious

Nine must be Mason County Eastern's lucky number: they beat Mesick with that score not once but twice on Monday. The Cardinals came out on top against the Bulldogs by a score of 9-6. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 9-8 on Monday.

Aaron Drake was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over five innings while giving up four earned runs off only one hit. That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in March. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs. Mason County Eastern is 3-1 when Drake posts two or more runs, but 1-9 otherwise.

Drake wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Eric Vercshuren, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI and one run. Trevor Steffas was another, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base and one run.

The win made it two in a row for Mason County Eastern and bumps their season record up to 4-10. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.0 runs over those games. As for Mesick, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 2-6.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Mason County Eastern will venture away from home to challenge Evart at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Mesick, they will head out to take on St. Mary at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
