Too much tailwind takes record book-worthy run.
Marvin Bracy has been able to defeat the top sprinters in the nation on a regular basis during his outstanding track career at
Boone (Orlando, Fla.). But there has been one opponent who frustrates him when he is at his best - the wind.

The Florida State University-bound standout won the 100-meter dash in a sizzling 10.06 seconds over the weekend during the annual Texas Relays in Austin, Texas. (The scoreboard at the stadium originally showed 10.07). His clocking was the fourth-fastest in high school history, but will not count in the record books due to a tailwind reading of 2.4 meters per second. Only 2 or less is allowable for records.
The national high school wind-legal record is 10.01 seconds.
Bracy has run 10.19 or better five times, but all have been wind-aided. His best wind-legal time is 10.28.
His personal trainer, Ricky Argro, told the Orlando Sentinel, "The wind is disappointing, but for Marvin to run this fastest starting out the year is a very good building block for us as far as looking at the Olympic Trials. Starting the year out like this has me believing he can actually go and compete with those Olympic-caliber guys."
He added, "Marvin kind of let up again today. He ran to the line, not through the line. He's kind of disappointed, because he knows he could have run even faster."

Kingwood Park (Kingwood, Texas) won the pole vault by clearing 17 feet, 6 1/2 inches.
In the girls division, Shelbi Vaughan of
Mansfield Legacy (Texas) not only set a national discus record (191-6), but came back to add the shot put crown with a toss of 48-11.
Jennifer Madu of
Plano East (Texas) also was a double winner with an 11.49 clocking in the 100 and a 2012 national-best triple jump of 42-1.
Sydney Conley of
Fayetteville (Ark.) produced the spring's best long jump with a 20-3 effort.
* Bracy, along with milers Cami Chapus of
Harvard-Westlake (North Hollywood, Calif.) and Edward Cheserek of
St. Benedict's Prep (Newark, N.J.) are the first three entries announced for the eighth adidas Grand Prix, scheduled for June 9 at Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island in New York City.
* The Speedgoat Classic in Newcastle, Wyo., produced a couple outstanding efforts in the boys throwing events.
Custer (S.D.) senior Tyler Schultz took over the national shot put lead with a 67-2 throw, while
Upton (Wyo.) senior Kevin Allen threw the discus 197-7 for No. 2 nationally.

Kell (Marietta, Ga.) star Kendell Williams dominated the Cobb County Championships with three first-place finishes and a pair of records. She set records in the 100-meter hurdles (13.58) and high jump (5-10) while also winning the long jump (20-1/2). Amba Etta-tawo of
McEachern (Powder Springs, Ga.) won the boys 100 in 10.53 and the 200 in 21.17.

Spruce Creek (Port Orange, Fla.) unveiled a great freshman prospect, Xavier Atkins, who won the 100 in 10.45 seconds during the 5 Star Conference Championships
