High school girls basketball rankings: No. 2 Sierra Canyon, No. 15 Paul VI each win MaxPreps Top 25 showdowns

Juju Watkins paces Trailblazers with 30 and 18 in victory over No. 6 La Jolla Country Day.

Like taking time to digest the holiday feast, the high school girls basketball landscape was quiet this past week. All but two teams in the MaxPreps Top 25 were in action, but there were only two meetings of ranked teams.

One saw Juju Watkins lead No. 2 Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) past No. 6 La Jolla Country Day (La Jolla, Calif.) 64-55 in the Chosen 1's showcase at USC's Galen Center. Watkins, a USC commit who showed the Trojan faithful what lies ahead, scored 30 and grabbed 18 rebounds. And while her star power was on full display, the Trailblazers got big time minutes and production from freshman center Emilia Krstevski, who scored 10 points and played tough defense on the Torreys' Arizona-bound post Breya Cunningham.

Both Sierra Canyon and LJCD head east for games at the Hoophall Classic — Sierra Canyon drawing No. 5 Sidwell Friends (Washington, D.C.) and La Jolla Country Day tackling Christ the King (Middle Village, N.Y.).

The other MaxPreps Top 25 showdown saw No. 15 Paul VI (Haddonfield, N.J.) and No. 16 Morris Catholic (Denville, N.J.) swap ranks after Hannah Hidalgo showed out in the former's 76-44 win. She dropped 41, shooting 17 of 19 from the field. The loss was the first for Morris Catholic but the Crusaders have a stretch over the next 12 days with games against Paul VI (Chantilly, Va.), No. 4. Etiwanda (Calif.) and No. 3 Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) to build their resume.
