Basketball Recap: Tuesday's Loss Ends Payson's Winning Streak

Payson blew Provo out of the water the last time the pair played, but on Tuesday Provo got their revenge. The Payson Lions fell just short of the Provo Bulldogs by a score of 51-49. The Lions' defeat signaled the end of their 11-game winning streak.

Payson lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Quincey Mathews, who posted 14 points along with five boards and four steals. Mathews has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last three times she's played. Emmy Hales was another key player, putting up ten points and six rebounds.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Provo to victory, but perhaps none more so than Tessa Deucher, who went 6 of 7 from beyond the arc on her way to 20 points. The dominant performance gave Deucher a new career-high in points. Another player making a difference was Sutton Villa, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 13 boards.

Payson's loss was their first in the region, dropping their region record down to 6-1 and their overall record down to 16-2. As for Provo, the victory was the fifth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 18-2.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Payson will welcome Timpanogos at 5:15 p.m. on Friday. Payson is facing Timpanogos at the right time seeing as Timpanogos is stuck on an eight-game losing streak. As for Provo, they will be playing at home against Uintah at 5:15 p.m. on Friday. That game will pit two of the most dominant centers against one another: Kenadie Maughan and Villa.
