Basketball Recap: Westport Gets the Win

Westport proved they can win big last Wednesday (they won by 20) and on Friday they proved they can win the close ones too. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 74-72 victory over the Avon Panthers. That's the third time they've managed to beat them this season, with their most recent win being a 66-54 victory back in January.

Avon's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Nyisah Miranda, who dropped a double-double with 21 points and 11 assists, and Thomas Edwards, who went 12-for-22 on his way to 30 points and five boards. Edwards has been hot for a while, having posted 17 or more points the last 18 times he's played. Another player making a difference was Douglas Ateku, who posted five points and 11 rebounds.

Westport has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-7 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 69.4 points over those games. Avon's loss was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 14-8.

As of now, neither Westport nor Avon have any future games scheduled.
