League recap: Odenweller breaks off league-leading run for Northland Christian

TAPPS Division II District 4 recap Oct. 23, 2012

Northland Christian's Carter Odenweller recorded the longest rushing play in TAPPS Division II District 4 this season in his game against Fort Bend Christian Academy last week. Odenweller ran for 69 yards on the play and finished with 231 on the day as his team beat the Eagles.

Northland Christian extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Fort Bend Christian Academy, 49-42. The victory was the sixth in a row for David Nelson's team.

Kellen Kacal threw for 223 yards and four touchdowns. He was 15-31 with two interceptions.

Nelson Gunnell provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Lutheran North lost to Westbury Christian. He completed 23 passes for 292 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for 49 yards. Gunnell's favorite target this week was Brandon Slater, who caught eight passes for 136 yards.

Johnny Thomas was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 19 carries, he ran for 241 yards as the Wildcats lost to the Wildcats. Teammate D'Eriq King added to the ground attack by rushing for 87 yards.

Jackson Beasley made the biggest impact on defense this week as David Roberts' team fell to the Cougars. The 5-foot-11 junior recorded one fumble and grabbed one sack.

Lutheran North's Gunnell and Slater have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading TAPPS Division II District 4 in both passing and receiving yards. Gunnell has thrown for 1401 yards this season, while Slater, a 6-foot-1 receiver, has 37 catches for 575 yards. Northland Christian's Odenweller leads the league in rushing yards with 848.

A big matchup in the league this week will be when the Eagles take on Pope John XXIII. Fort Bend Christian Academy is in second place, while the Lions are in fifth place.

Pope John XXIII moved up to 679 from 733 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. Scot Mills' team climbed the ranks as a result of besting Lutheran South 51-26.
