South Adams is a perfect 10-0 against Southern Wells since April of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Starfires will take on the Raiders at 5:00 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (South Adams has three straight victories, Southern Wells has eight straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
South Adams is headed into the contest having just posted their closest win since May 28, 2024 on Wednesday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past Jay County 3-1.
Addie Baker spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered a run (which was unearned) on three hits and racked up eight Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in seven consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Shelby Weigel, who went 1-for-2 with three RBI and one double. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April.
Meanwhile, Southern Wells scored first but ultimately less than Monroe Central in their matchup on Wednesday. They fell 7-4 to the Golden Bears.
Alexis Pennington put in work while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over seven innings while giving up three earned (and four unearned) runs off 12 hits (and not a single walk). Pennington was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
In other batting news, Remi Holmes made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with one home run and two RBI.
South Adams pushed their record up to 12-2 with the win, which was their third straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games. As for Southern Wells, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-15.
Southern Wells' pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: South Adams has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 10.1 hits per game. It's a different story for Southern Wells, though, as they've been averaging 11.1 hits. Given South Adams' sizable advantage in that area, the Raiders will need to find a way to close that gap.
South Adams took their win against Southern Wells in their previous meeting back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 10-0 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Starfires since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
