Softball Recap: Reed-Custer Comes Up Short

Reed-Custer extended their losing streak to six on Wednesday, dropping their season record down to 9-14 in the process. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 7-6 heartbreaker at the hands of the Grant Park Dragons. The Comets were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Dragons apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in March of 2024.

As for Grant Park, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 11-8. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory they have posted since May 14, 2024.

For Grant Park's part, Cheyenne Hayes made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 11 batters over seven innings while giving up three earned (and three unearned) runs off seven hits. Hayes has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts in 11 consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with one home run and four RBI.

In other batting news, Reegan Thompson and Abigail Roberts did most of the damage at the plate: Thompson went 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base, while Roberts went 3-for-4 with three runs, one triple, and one stolen base. Thompson has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times she's played. Lola Malkowski was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one RBI.

Coming up, Reed-Custer will head out on the road to take on Morris at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Comets' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Redskins have averaged an impressive 8.7 runs per game this season. As for Grant Park, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Clifton Central at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
