Football Recap: Classical Purple vs. Ponaganset Chieftains
It's hard to turn regular season success into postseason wins, a fact Classical can now relate to. They took a hard 28-13 fall against the Ponaganset Chieftains on Sunday. The Purple were red-hot offensively headed into the game (they scored no less than 31 points in the four contests prior) but the Chieftains' defense proved too tough.
When it comes to explaining why Classical lost, don't look at Jordan Duke. Despite the final result, he rushed for 124 yards and two touchdowns on only 15 carries. Duke has been hot , having posted two or more rushing touchdowns the last five times he's played. Classical also got help from Silas Mckay, who showed off his sure hands for 83 receiving yards.
Even if they lost, Classical's defense still kept up the pressure with four sacks. London Vincent was particularly dangerous to the passing game, picking up two himself.
Trevor Lytle was his usual excellent self, picking up 135 receiving yards and two touchdowns for Ponaganset. Lytle got the majority of those receiving yards when he pulled down a pass and took off for a gain of 75 yards. The team also got some help courtesy of Robert Grenga, who threw for 176 yards and two touchdowns on only 11 passes.
With the defeat, Classical broke their four-game winning streak and moved their record to 9-2. As for Ponaganset, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 10-1.
Classical does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Ponaganset, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next matchup, a 40-6 loss against Burrillville on the 28th.
