Softball Game Recap: The Academy of the Holy Cross Tartans vs. Bishop O'Connell Knights

The Academy of the Holy Cross extended their losing streak to six on Wednesday, dropping their season record down to 1-7 in the process. They might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 14-0 to the Bishop O'Connell Knights, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Knights this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 14-0 back in March.

As for Bishop O'Connell, the win keeps they at an undefeated 11-0. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.5 runs on average over those games.

For Bishop O'Connell's part, Ella Fletcher was a major factor no matter where she played. She tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Fletcher has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one walk in seven consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Abby Bond, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two triples, one stolen base, and two RBI. Those two triples gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Gigi Payne, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one home run and two RBI.

We've got plenty of inter-region action coming up soon. The Academy of the Holy Cross will square off against rival Elizabeth Seton at 4:00 p.m. on the 25th. Meanwhile, Bishop O'Connell is set to face off against their familiar foe Paul VI at 4:00 p.m. on the 29th. Both teams are headed into the matchup with plenty of momentum (the Knights have won 13 straight at home dating back to last season, while the Panthers won three straight on the road), something that'll have to change.
