Basketball Recap: Fuquay - Varina Takes Loss Despite Strong Efforts from Beckett Coon and Abdou Diop

After flying high against Corinth Holders last Saturday, Fuquay - Varina came back down to earth. The Fuquay - Varina Bengals took a 73-63 hit to the loss column at the hands of the South Garner Titans on Friday. The defeat continues a trend for the Bengals in their matchups with the Titans: they've now lost five in a row.

Fuquay - Varina's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Abdou Diop, who dropped a double-double with 16 points and 11 boards, and Beckett Coon, who went 7-for-17 to rack up 23 points and five assists. That's the most rebounds Diop has posted since back in November of 2024. Another player making a difference was Nathan Mathew, who had seven points.

They weren't the only ones working in the assist department: Fuquay - Varina was working as a unit and finished the game with 15 assists. This was only their 16th loss (out of 20 games) when they've passed the ball that well.

Fuquay - Varina's defeat dropped their record down to 4-20. As for South Garner, their win bumped their record up to 9-14.

Fuquay - Varina and South Garner could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps North Carolina Rankings. Fuquay - Varina (ranked 359th) will meet Clayton (ranked 51st) at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Similarly, South Garner will challenge Willow Spring at 6:00 p.m. on Monday down 151 places (238 vs. 87).
