Baseball Recap: La Jolla Comes Up Short

La Jolla easily dispatched Canyon Crest Academy last Thursday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. The La Jolla Vikings fell just short of the Mar Vista Mariners by a score of 7-5 on Saturday. The Vikings were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Mariners apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in March of 2024.

Will Griebe-Arzate was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he didn't allow a single earned run while striking out six over 4.1 innings pitched. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-low in earned runs (zero).

At the plate, Zach Gergurich and Hank Hansen did some serious damage despite the final result: Gergurich went 3-for-4 with two RBI and one double, while Hansen scored a run while going 3-for-4. Those two RBI gave Gergurich a new career-high.

Even though they lost, La Jolla kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.

La Jolla's record now sits at 1-3. As for Mar Vista, they now have a winning record of 3-2.

Coming up, La Jolla will be playing in front of their home fans against San Dieguito Academy at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Mar Vista, they will take on Canyon Crest Academy at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The last four games Mar Vista has played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
