Preview: Layton Lancers vs. Fremont Silverwolves
Layton has enjoyed the comforts of home their last two games, but now they'll head out on the road. They will face off against the Fremont Silverwolves at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Layton has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 1,274 points over their last 17 matchups.
Last Tuesday, Layton faced Weber in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Layton walked away with an 82-70 win over Weber. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Layton's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was David Katoa, who scored 32 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Katoa has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Mekhi Martin, who scored 24 points.
Meanwhile, you can't lose the contest if you win every quarter, and that was precisely Fremont's strategy against Syracuse on Tuesday. Fremont enjoyed a cozy 62-44 win over Syracuse. The victory made it back-to-back wins for Fremont.
Fremont's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Ryan Furgeson, who scored 12 points along with five rebounds. Easton Duft was another key contributor, scoring ten points along with three steals.
Layton's win was their tenth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 16-1. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 76.9 points per game. As for Fremont, their win bumped their record up to 10-7.
Some high-performance offense is likely on the agenda as Layton and Fremont are some of the highest scoring teams in the league. Layton hasn't had any problem running up the score this season, having averaged 74.2 points per game. However, it's not like Fremont struggles in that department as they've been averaging 60.8 points per game. With both teams so easily able to put up points, the only question left is who can run the score up higher.
Layton came out on top in a nail-biter against Fremont in their previous matchup back in February of 2023, sneaking past 62-60. Will Layton repeat their success, or does Fremont have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
