Preview: Caliche Buffaloes vs. Akron Rams
Caliche is 1-8 against Akron since February of 2015 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Caliche Buffaloes will head out on the road to challenge the Akron Rams at 4:00 p.m. Caliche will be strutting in after a victory while Akron will be coming in after a defeat.
Caliche had to endure a three-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They came out on top against Otis by a score of 48-38 on Monday. The win was just what Caliche needed coming off of a 77-26 defeat in their prior game.
Caliche's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Karsyn Huss, who scored 15 points along with five assists and two steals. Huss is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last three games she's played. Ava Hernandez was another key contributor, scoring 16 points along with seven rebounds.
Meanwhile, Akron came up short against Y on Friday and fell 50-41.
Kinsey Grauer put forth a good effort for the losing side as she scored 17 points along with seven rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Taylor Benish, who scored seven points along with two steals.
Caliche's victory bumped their record up to 7-4. As for Akron, they have not been sharp recently, as they've lost three of their last four matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-5 record this season.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Caliche have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 24.3 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Akron struggles in that department as they've been averaging 27.4 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Caliche lost to Akron on the road by a decisive 56-42 margin in their previous matchup back in January of 2023. Can Caliche avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
