Quarterback prodigy David Sills transferring from West Virginia to California JC

Sills will transfer from West Virginia to El Camino Junior College in California on Monday.

Six years after committing to then USC football coach Lane Kiffin, David Sills is finally heading to Southern California to play quarterback.

But it's not for the Trojans.

The quarterback prodigy who made national news by accepting a 2010 college offer in the seventh grade, is transferring from West Virginia, where he played wide receiver in 2015, to El Camino Junior College in Torrance.

West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen sent out a statement Thursday morning clarifying Sills' departure: "We appreciate everything David has done for the Mountaineer football program. He has done everything asked of him and has been a great teammate. He has decided to transfer to pursue his dream of playing quarterback in college. We wish him nothing but the best in all of his future endeavors on and off the field."

Sills, an East Coast product, was discovered by Kiffin by way of Southern California quarterback guru coach Steve Clarkson, who helped mentor, among others, Matt Barkley, Matt Leinart and Ben Roethlisberger.

Sills, now 20, attended high school at Red Lion Christian Academy (Bear, Del.) and Eastern Christian Academy (Elkton, Md.), and after Kiffin departed USC, he committed to West Virginia, where he had seven catches for 131 yards and two touchdowns in 2015.

The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder was ranked the No. 19 pro-style quarterback in the country as a senior at ECA by 247Sports Composite. He had seven college offers.

Part of the reason for his departure is that another quarterback prodigy, former Florida starter Will Grier, transferred to West Virginia. He'll be eligible in 2017. West Virginia starting quarterback Skylar Howard is slated to be the starter again in 2016. Grier passed for 14,565 yards and 195 touchdowns during his career at Davidson Day (NC) in 2011-2013.
