Softball Recap: Northern Guilford Finds Playoff Glory Versus Marvin Ridge

Northern Guilford had already proven themselves in the regular season and they didn't miss a beat now that it's playoff time. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Marvin Ridge Mavericks on Friday, sneaking past 10-8. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Nighthawks have posted since March 12th.

Dakotah Wilkins spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered five earned (and three unearned) runs on 12 hits and racked up seven Ks.

At the plate, Asyah Smith was incredible, going 3-for-4 with three runs, three RBI, and one stolen base. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Morgan Headen, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBI, and one double.

Northern Guilford hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Marvin Ridge struck out seven times.

Northern Guilford is on a roll lately: they've won 19 of their last 20 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 23-4 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.8 runs over those games. As for Marvin Ridge, they moved to 18-4 with that defeat, which also ended their three-game winning streak.

Looking ahead, Northern Guilford will take on West Forsyth at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Nighthawks 2.7, the Titans 1.6) so any runs scored will be well earned. Marvin Ridge does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
