In the top matchup of the Week 6 of the Denver-area high school football schedule, Grandview (Aurora) junior quarterback
Jacob Burr rushed for a score and passed for another as the No. 5 Wolves beat No. 12 and cross-town rival Eaglecrest (Aurora) 14-11 on Thursday in the Class 5A Metro League opener for both teams.
Burr started the scoring with a 1-yard dive before halftime before connecting with
Noah Salazar on a 33-yard TD pass to give Grandview (6-0) a 14-3 lead in the third quarter. Eaglecrest scored late to provide the final margin. It was the first loss of the season for the Raptors (5-1).
Grandview will meet No. 19 Cherokee Trail (Aurora) next week, while Eaglecrest will face Overland (Aurora).
There were two upsets in the Colorado Top 25 on Thursday, as Vista PEAK Prep (Aurora) used a 28-point second quarter en route to a 48-27 non-league win against No. 16 Dakota Ridge (Littleton). It was the first loss for the Eagles (4-1), while the Bison remained unbeaten (5-0).
Also, ThunderRidge (Highlands Ranch) knocked off neighborhood rival and No. 20 Mountain Vista (Highlands Ranch) 24-17 in double overtime in the Class 5A Metro South opener for both teams.
In Friday's action, No.1 Cherry Creek (Greenwood Village) built a
30-0 first-quarter lead on its way to a 44-0 win against Overland, while
No. 2 Ralston Valley (Arvada) also remained unbeaten in routing
Arvada West 49-7.
Defending 5A champion and No 3 Valor Christian (Highlands Ranch) received three TD passes from senior
Cole Bott and 220 rushing yards and two scores from sophomore
Gavin Sawchuk
in a 42-7 victory against No. 18 Castle View (Highlands Ranch). Meanwhile,
No. 4 Columbine upped its record to 6-0 by topping No. 14 Mullen 43-3.
The lone upset Friday was No. 25 Arapahoe (Centennial) scoring a 10-7 victory against Cherokee Trail.
