Basketball Recap: Kazion Morehead's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Freeport over Crystal Lake South

Freeport lost against Crystal Lake South back in February of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Saturday. The Freeport Pretzels took a 75-63 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Crystal Lake South Gators. While losing is never fun, the Pretzels can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Illinois basketball rankings (they are ranked 323rd, while the Gators are ranked 50th).

Freeport's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Kazion Morehead, who went 7 for 17 en route to 20 points along with eight rebounds and seven assists. That's the most points Morehead has posted since back in December of 2024. Another player making a difference was Khaden Newton, who went 5 of 7 on his way to 10 points.

Even though they lost, Freeport smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive boards in six consecutive contests.

Freeport has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 9-12 record this season. As for Crystal Lake South, the victory (which was their sixth in a row) raised their record to 17-3.

Freeport wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, an 80-66 loss against Dixon on the 20th. As for Crystal Lake South, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 74-43 win against Crystal Lake Central on the 22nd.
