Softball Recap: Monterey Picks Up Sixth Straight Win at Home

Monterey had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the nine-run drubbing they dealt Red Boiling Springs on Wednesday. The Wildcats were the clear victors by a 14-5 margin over the Bulldogs. The result was nothing new for the Wildcats, who have now won eight matches by six runs or more so far this season.

Haylee Garthwait made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out six over five innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and one double.

In other batting news, Kaylin Shepherd was incredible, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. Those two RBI gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Haylee Trevathan, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.

Monterey was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .435. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

Monterey's win was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 11-9-1. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.5 runs on average over those games. As for Red Boiling Springs, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 1-5-2.

Coincidentally, Monterey and Red Boiling Springs will both be playing Jackson County the next time they take the field. The Wildcats will head out to face the Blue Devils at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, while the Bulldogs will head out to face them at 5:00 p.m. on Monday.
