Basketball Recap: Frederick Golden Eagles vs. Cherokee Trail Cougars
Frederick unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-court advantage in their season opener. They took a 61-56 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Cherokee Trail Cougars on Monday. The Golden Eagles were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Cougars apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in December of 2024.
Frederick's defeat came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Dante Lechuga, who shot 41% from the field on his way to 16 points and four steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Zach Burton, who went 5-for-10 to rack up 14 points and seven boards.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Cherokee Trail to victory, but perhaps none more so than Anthony Ayon, who shot 83% from the field en route to 12 points. Cameron Hopkins was another key player, putting up 13 points.
Looking ahead, Frederick will head out to take on Loveland at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Cherokee Trail, they will take on Arvada West in a tournament on Thursday.
