Football Recap: Chaparral Comes Up Short in High-Profile Contest with Coronado

On Thursday, Chaparral faced Coronado in a battle between two of the state's top teams. The Chaparral Cowboys fell to the Coronado Cougars 19-13. The Cowboys lost against the Cougars in their previous head to head back in January of 2024, too, but the margin this time around was much closer than the 43-0 score last time.

Christina Chavez threw for 116 yards and one touchdown. Na'Shayla Williamson was her top target, picking up 61 receiving yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, Asia Washington rushed for 81 yards.

Chaparral's defeat dropped their record down to 6-4. As for Coronado, they have been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight games, which provided a nice bump to their 10-6 record this season.

Chaparral will square off against Rancho at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Chaparral's defense has only allowed 14.3 points per game this season, so Rancho's offense will have their work cut out for them. As for Coronado, they will host Canyon Springs at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
