Baseball Recap: Independence Starts Season with Victory at Home

Independence took care of business in their home opener (barely) on Friday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Cortez Colts, sneaking past 9-8. The win continues a trend for the Patriots in their matchups with the Colts: they've now won five in a row.

Sebastian Sandoval was incredible, scoring two runs while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. Bryan Orozco was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.

Independence was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .455. The last time their batting average was this high was back in March of 2024.

Coming up, Independence is taking a road trip to challenge Carl Hayden Community at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Cortez, they will take on Phoenix Christian in a tournament on Wednesday.
