Recap: Chiefland Indians vs. Newberry Panthers

The Chiefland Indians and the Newberry Panthers squared off in some playoff action on Friday, but sadly the Chiefland Indians had to settle for second. Chiefland was outmatched by Newberry on the road and fell 49-16. While losing is never fun, Chiefland can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida football rankings (they are ranked 308th, while Newberry is ranked 91st).

Despite the loss, Chiefland still got an impressive performance from Osten Jones, who picked up 90 receiving yards and a touchdown, and also rushed for 122 yards on only 12 carries. Jones' longest reception was for an incredible 90 yards.

Newberry's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Keil Mcgriff, who threw for 397 yards and five touchdowns on only 18 passes. Mcgriff is on a roll when it comes to passing touchdowns, as he's now passed for three or more in the last three games he's played. Kaleb Woods was another key contributor, gaining 193 total yards and four touchdowns.

Chiefland has yet to win a game on the road this season, leaving them with a 4-7 record. The slump could be explained by some tough opposition over that stretch, namely Newberry, Frostproof, and Newberry. As for Newberry, the victory (which was their fifth in a row) raised their record to 9-2.

Chiefland does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Newberry will head out on the road to face off against Hawthorne at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Hawthorne is also coming in off of a big victory, so somebody is in for a big reversal of fortune.
