Basketball Recap: Merritt Island Comes Up Short

Merritt Island lost against Satellite back in December of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Thursday. The Merritt Island Mustangs lost to the Satellite Scorpions at home by a 55-36 margin. While losing is never fun, the Mustangs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 594th, while the Scorpions are ranked 280th).

Despite the loss, Merritt Island saw an underclassman step up: freshman Alexis Underwood went 6 of 15 on her way to 20 points and three steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Underwood has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Lexie Overdorf, who posted six points and four blocks.

Even though they lost, Merritt Island smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in 12 consecutive contests.

Merritt Island's defeat dropped their record down to 3-16. As for Satellite, they pushed their record up to 12-9 with the win, which was their third straight on the road.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Satellite beat Merritt Island by a score of 55-29 on Tuesday.
