Preview: Myers Park Mustangs vs. South Mecklenburg Sabres

The Myers Park Mustangs will head out on the road to take on the South Mecklenburg Sabres at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Myers Park is currently enjoying a perfect season and no doubt want to keep things rolling.

Myers Park can now show off five landslide victories after their most recent match on Tuesday. They really took it to Olympic for the full four quarters, racking up a 56-24 victory at home. That looming 56-24 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for Myers Park yet this season.

Jerin Truesdale and Chayla McDaniel were among the main playmakers for Myers Park as the former scored 16 points along with five assists and five rebounds and the latter scored 11 points along with seven steals. Truesdale has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last six times she's played. Another player making a difference was Laura Lassiter, who scored eight points.

Meanwhile, South Mecklenburg didn't have too much trouble with Pinecrest on the road on Monday as they won 58-40. Given South Mecklenburg's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 133rd, while Pinecrest is ranked 358th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Makailah Davis was her usual excellent self, scoring 30 points along with four steals. That makes it three consecutive games in which she has scored at least a third of South Mecklenburg's points. Lilly Heaslet was another key contributor, scoring two points along with nine rebounds and two steals.

Myers Park's victory was their 11th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 15-0. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 54.6 points per game. As for South Mecklenburg, their victory bumped their record up to 9-6.

Myers Park came up short against South Mecklenburg in their previous meeting back in February of 2023, falling 47-43. Thankfully for Myers Park, Maggie Houpt (who scored 22 points along with three steals) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
