Newmarket came out on top against Epping on Wednesday thanks in part to the team's impressive six-run seventh inning. The Mules walked away with a 10-5 win over the Blue Devils. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 5-4 back in April.
Kierra Souphakhot made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out ten batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and four unearned) runs off four hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in seven consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with one home run, three RBI, and two runs.
In other batting news, Ava Zundell was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBI, and one double. That double was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Olivia Semprini, who went 3-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Newmarket was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .389. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Epping only posted a batting average of .240.
The victory made it two in a row for Newmarket and bumps their season record up to 9-1. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 7 runs in those games. As for Epping, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 8-5 record this season.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Newmarket will square off against Farmington at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. As for Epping, they will challenge Raymond at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Rams will roll in looking for their sixth straight victory, something the Blue Devils surely won't give up without a fight.
