Basketball Recap: Aubrey Birney and Taylor Birney Secure Win for Russell

Russell won the last time they faced Trego and things went their way on Saturday too. The Russell Broncos enjoyed a cozy 45-26 win over the Trego Golden Eagles. That 19 point margin sets a new team best for the Broncos this season.

Russell was led to victory by Taylor Birney and Aubrey Birney. Taylor went 5 of 10 en route to 12 points and five assists, while Aubrey posted eight points in addition to six boards and three steals. Annika Nichols also deserves some recognition as she grabbed her first steals of the season.

Despite the defeat, Trego saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Bailey Ziegler scored eight points and nine rebounds.

Russell's victory bumped their record up to 3-6. As for Trego, they have also been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last seven contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-8 record this season.

Russell will get to enjoy the win for a while: their next game is against Hoxie at 6:00 p.m. on January 28th. The timing isn't great for Russell: they have been struggling with four straight losses at home, while Hoxie has snatched up four consecutive wins on the road. As for Trego, they will take on Hill City at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday. Trego is facing Hill City at the right time seeing as Hill City is stuck on an eight-game losing streak.
