Softball Recap: Ewing Blue Devils vs. Phillipsburg Stateliners
Ewing fought the good fight in their extra-innings game against Phillipsburg on Saturday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Stateliners by a score of 9-8. The Blue Devils just can't catch a break and have now endured three losses in a row.
Abbie Mahan was huge no matter where she played even without the win. On the mound, she struck out eight batters over 7.2 innings while giving up five earned (and four unearned) runs off nine hits (and only one walk). Mahan was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-4.
In other batting news, Amonnie Wertz Panniel and Sydney Mahan stepped up to the plate in a big way. Wertz Panniel scored a run and stole a base while going 3-for-5, while Mahan scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-4. Mahan also put up a double, which was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Kim Nguyen, who scored a run while going 3-for-5.
Ewing's defeat dropped their record down to 1-4. As for Phillipsburg, their win (their first of the season) made their record 1-2.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Ewing will challenge Nottingham at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Phillipsburg, they will face off against Delaware Valley at 4:00 p.m. on Monday.
