Baseball Game Preview: Laurel Spartans vs. Burgettstown Blue Devils

The Laurel Spartans will square off against the Burgettstown Blue Devils at 4:15 p.m. on Monday. The last five games Laurel has played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.

The home team had won the previous three meetings between Laurel and Mohawk Area, and Mohawk Area kept the tradition alive. The Spartans fell just short of the Warriors by a score of 4-3 on Friday. The Spartans haven't had much luck with the Warriors recently, as the team has come up short the last five times they've met.

Kolton Carlson was cooking despite his team's loss, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI and one double. He is on a roll when it comes to hits, as he's now got three or more in each of the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Luca Santini, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-2.

Meanwhile, Burgettstown didn't have quite enough to beat California on Tuesday and fell 3-1. The loss was the Blue Devils' first of the season.

Matthew Bredel was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. On the mound, he pitched seven innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off seven hits. Bredel was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one double. That double marked the first that he hit this season.

Bredel wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Sam Elich, who scored a run while going 1-for-4.

Laurel now has a losing record of 3-4. As for Burgettstown, their defeat was their first of the season and makes their record 3-1.
