Baseball Game Preview: San Leandro Pirates vs. Mt. Eden Monarchs

For the second straight game, San Leandro will face off against Mt. Eden. The Pirates will host the Monarchs at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. San Leandro's pitching crew has only allowed 2.6 runs per game this season, so Mt. Eden's hitters will have their work cut out for them.

San Leandro is probably headed into the game with a chip on their shoulder considering Mt. Eden just ended the team's nine-game winning streak on Wednesday. They fell just short of the Monarchs by a score of 3-2. Having soared to a lofty 14 runs in the game before, the Pirates couldn't push the score so high this time.

For Mt. Eden's part, Mateo Romo spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on six hits. Romo is becoming a predictor of the Monarchs' success: when he allows at most one earned run the team is 4-1 (and 8-10 when he doesn't).

On the hitting side, Mt. Eden's victory was truly a team effort as six different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Bryan Zamora, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with one run.

Mt. Eden pushed their record up to 12-11 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.3 runs over those games. As for San Leandro, their defeat dropped their record down to 15-7.

The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. San Leandro has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Mt. Eden struggles in that department as they've been averaging 6.7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
