Baseball Game Preview: Gross Catholic Cougars vs. Pius X Thunderbolts

Gross Catholic hasn't had much luck against Pius X recently, but that could start to change on Saturday. The Cougars will face off against the Thunderbolts at 12:00 p.m. Gross Catholic is coming into the game hot, having won their last six games.

Gross Catholic's pitching crew heads into the matchup hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Friday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past Mount Michael Benedictine 1-0. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Cougars have posted since April 29, 2024.

The result came thanks to Charlie Yeshnowski's shutout, as he gave up just four hits.

At the plate, Gross Catholic's victory was truly a team effort as two different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Robbie Brennan, who scored a run and stole two bases while going 1-for-2. Brennan has been hot recently, having posted two or more stolen bases the last three times he's played. Carson Kozeal was another, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI.

Meanwhile, Pius X came up short against Lincoln Southwest on Friday, falling 12-2. The Thunderbolts haven't had much luck with the Silver Hawks recently, as the team has come up short the last four times they've met.

Gross Catholic's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 6-1. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Pius X, their loss dropped their record down to 3-5.

Gross Catholic might still be hurting after the 15-3 defeat they got from Pius X when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Can the Cougars avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
