Baseball Game Preview: Hopkinton Hawks vs. Derryfield Cougars

The Hopkinton Hawks will venture away from home to square off against the Derryfield Cougars at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Hopkinton fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against Hillsboro-Deering on Tuesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Hillcats by a score of 7-6. Surprisingly, this marked the Hawks' fifth straight game in which the away team has come away the victor.

Meanwhile, it was close, but on Monday Derryfield sidestepped Prospect Mountain for a 6-5 victory. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Cougars.

The team relied heavily on Adam Willett, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and one double. Those three hits gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Keith Townsend, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.

Hopkinton dropped their record down to 4-13 with the loss, which was their third straight at home. Even worse, they were so close so many times: the defeats came by an average of only one runs. As for Derryfield, their record now sits at 11-6.

Hopkinton couldn't quite get it done against Derryfield in their previous matchup back in May of 2021 as they fell 8-5. Can the Hawks avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
